PASCAL news from the State House Report

Students and Faculty--

Thank you for your comments and concerns about the future of PASCAL Delivers and the statewide electronic databases. Library faculty and staff here at The Citadel are working hard to pare database and periodical subscriptions while minimizing harm to the undergraduate and graduate curricula, in order to prepare to renew core databases like Academic Search Premier, Psychology & Behavioral Sciences Collection, and Literature Resource Center. This situation underscores the importance of sharing syllabuses or assignments with your School's liaison in the library.

You can continue to comment to PASCAL HERE.

The libruary and it's services are an essential part of higher education. PASCAL is an important part of this access to current scientific information and must not be removed. I would liken the proposed cuts to asking the captain of a fishing vessel to continue to harvest the same quality and quantity of fish without a boat.

  2. If higher education is a priority in this state, then how can state government deprive its educators of the resources they need to succeed?

Faculty of South Carolina’s “state-supported” colleges and universities must have access to current literature to properly instruct students and to sustain their independent research programs.

What will be next? Closing the doors of the libraries altogether?

  3. As a new professor starting research, I have a hard time imagining how I am going to search the literature appropriately to ensure that my field of research is open and how I will be able to draw on the decades of experience that exists in the literature.

Publishing and research is obviously not a priority in the higher education system.

  4. Other colleagues have also expressed their opinion and emphasized the importance that PASCAL plays in their research as well in the research conducted by the students.

I would also like to point out that for an institution such as The Citadel, electronic access of published work is of utmost importance, since small institutions might lack both the financial resources as well as space requirements for purchasing hard copies of published materials. PASCAL and its databases are becoming an important and indispensable tool in everyone's effort to enhance the work quality and provide more current information in the field of Science and Mathematics.
